The parade of
owners put the site through several modifications. Its reached its
final shape around 1506. The castle suffered structural damage in an
earthquake around 1703. Further damage was inflicted in an explosion
during World War I. At that time the
Keep was being used as a weapons depot.
A Great Trench some 15 wide and 30 feet deep, 20 feet long was dug
inside the northern edge of the castle. This occurred in World
War II during the construction of a new munitions depot.
Lona Campbell
& Ebbie Flynn (who had
the the time were conducting antiquities work at the site) convinced Burrow
officials to relocate the munitions but the damage was done.
Flynn's
work did further damage. Not interested in the newer
cities, he dug through those layers to reach the early days of Dunn
Burrow life.
Some artifacts he
found were sold to continue work at the site. Others were donated to
a village museum only to be stolen in the 1960s. It is thought they have been seen lately as show props for
rock band like GWAR.
