Belling and other Customs
Traditional holds that MacThoy put bells
on the
undead to alert them to their
presence. Belling continues
to this day. MacThoy are known to put bells on their
Village Idiots. The
noise helps them keep track of those who
are a hazard to themselves and others as well as serving as sign
of shame much like pillorying without the excessive equipment.
The expression "having one's bell
rung" comes from being designated the
Village Idiot. |
